Geneva-In September 2018, Frederique Constant made another attack and proudly launched a new work-30 limited edition Perpetual Calendar Tourbillon Manufacture watches, to highlight The brand’s pioneering spirit, unremitting efforts and passion for watchmaking. Over the past 30 years, Frederique Constant has launched the ‘accessible luxury’ high-quality Swiss watches at its watchmaking factory in Plan-les-Ouates, Geneva, Switzerland.
After three years of research and development in 2004, Frederique Constant launched the first in-house patented movement, the award-winning Heart Beat Manufacture movement. Four years later, the brand launched its first tourbillon movement based on this movement. In 2016, Frederique Constant successfully launched another luxury precision watch-a perpetual calendar watch. The self-made tourbillon perpetual calendar watch introduced to celebrate the brand’s 30th anniversary is the crystallization of all the watchmaking processes the brand has accumulated during the development of its own movement.
Frederique Constant’s own movement tourbillon perpetual calendar watch pursues extreme precision. Its main function is to offset the errors caused by the gravity of the earth affecting the vertically operating movement. The mechanism of this timepiece is its new FC-975 automatic winding movement.
This luxury precision watch has a set of silicon escapement wheels and forks, an intelligent heavy balance wheel and a tourbillon frame. The achievements of these timepieces in the field of watchmaking technology are amazing. Every detail of its tourbillon movement is carefully developed during the industrialization process. It is the watchmaking craftsmanship that the brand has accumulated over the years that has created this watch. It is these features mentioned above that make its own tourbillon perpetual calendar watch ensure extraordinary performance and the highest standards of manufacturing technology.
The brand uses innovative technologies to overcome the shortcomings of traditional escapement wheels and forks with materials such as silicon. It makes the tourbillon run more smoothly, effectively reducing friction, and improving the power efficiency required by the movement. This material is lightweight, durable, antimagnetic, and extremely resistant to temperature changes, ensuring greater precision. It has excellent anti-friction properties, making lubricants less important. Because the escape wheel is responsible for activating the “tick-and-walk” of the watch and releases the power stored in the mainspring, the light escapement wheel can reduce inertia, improve reliability and accuracy, and ensure that the timing results over time It keeps increasing.
Perpetual calendar tourbillon frame with superior balance
Frederique Constant’s patented patent for this highly balanced tourbillon frame. It consists of 80 parts, all of which are made by CNC machine tools of the brand watch factory, with an accuracy of 1-2 microns (0.001-0.002 mm). In order to achieve the highest accuracy, the brand adds a light weight to the tourbillon frame to achieve a superior balance effect. When the tourbillon was made, its frame was slightly unbalanced because the escape wheel and fork were off-center. Frederique Constant added a ‘smart screw’ system to the tourbillon outer frame to balance the weight and make the tourbillon frame superiorly balanced. The result is more stable amplitude and rate.
Frederique Constant’s own tourbillon perpetual calendar has a power reserve of 38 hours, a vibration frequency of 4 Hz, and a balance wheel vibrating 28,800 times per hour. The tourbillon consists of a movable frame and is driven by a gear train with a balance wheel and its escapement. Each time the balance wheel receives a pulse, the tourbillon frame and its components rotate slightly. The gear train turned forward 691,200 times in four years, representing more than 1 billion pulses. This is in stark contrast to the movements of the perpetual calendar series, whose gears only rotate once every four years.
The perpetual calendar watch also shows the day, date and month, and requires even less adjustment than the average calendar. This highly sophisticated precision watch not only displays the number of days per month, but also the year, and is automatically adjusted during leap years. After the adjustment, it will be adjusted according to the 30- and 31-day months, and February will change from 28 days to 29 days every 4 years in the leap year. Perpetual calendar watches should not require any manual adjustment within 400 years. However, the Gregorian calendar is an exception. This watch needs to be adjusted on March 1, 2100. The hours and minutes can be adjusted via the crown. The dial displays the month and leap year at 12 o’clock, the date at 3 o’clock, and the week at 9 o’clock.
The tourbillon frame is located in the window at 6 o’clock on the dial, and its built-in hand rotates once every minute, which can be used as a second dial. The number is engraved on the center main plate of each frame, which matches the limited edition number on the case. This watch is limited to 88 pieces in stainless steel and 30 pieces in 18K rose gold, each of which is individually numbered. 30 limited edition watches represent the 30th anniversary of the brand.
This timepiece has a triple case with a diameter of 42 mm. It is available in polished steel, 18K rose gold-plated steel, and 18K rose gold with a transparent case back. Its Swiss-made movement is set with 33 jewel bearings. The stainless steel and 18K rose gold models are water-resistant to 50 meters and 30 meters, respectively. Two of them use a stunning silver skeleton dial with Roman numerals to show bold design aesthetics. The owner of this watch can appreciate the delicate pearl patterns hand-drawn on the components of the perpetual calendar through the hollow dial. These timepieces are presented with a rose gold-plated stainless steel triple case with a brown alligator strap, or a polished stainless steel case with a black alligator strap. Through the transparent back of the sapphire crystal, the owner of the watch can appreciate the exquisite Côtes de Genève decoration.
The other two use a more simple and refined silver dial, decorated with a pattern of clous de Paris guilloché, with Roman numerals. The watch is presented in a 18k rose gold-plated stainless steel case with a brown alligator leather strap, or a polished stainless steel case with a black alligator leather strap.
The most impressive thing about Frederique Constant watches is that the movements are developed, manufactured and assembled by the brand independently and at a very competitive price. The perpetual calendar tourbillon watch represents the essence of luxury precision timepieces. Its production process is equipped with high-quality watchmaking technology, which is not only time-consuming, but also has high requirements for accuracy and complexity. It symbolizes the integration of precision watchmaking tradition and the brand’s unique concept of vividly interpreting watchmaking technology. These extraordinary timepieces embody the concept of ‘accessible luxury’ proposed by Peter and Aletta Stas.
